Hear ye, hear ye! There's a deal afoot on Apple's coveted iPhone 5, and we've got all the details in our weekend recap today. But even if you're not in the market for a new smartphone, there's plenty more that happened over the weekend, so you'll want to read on and make sure you don't miss out on a single moment.
Not much to say about this one -- if you'e in the market for an iPhone 5, you'd better head to Best Buy before the calendar turns to Wednesday, December 11. That's when a limited-time deal on Apple's newest handset comes to a close, offering $50 off any model from any carrier in any color. For those who can live with 16GB of storage, that puts the cost of your new special friend at a mere $149.99 with two-year agreement. The only caveat is that at least some of the models appear to be part of a promotion Best Buy is running on Monday and Tuesday only, so those who snooze will presumably lose...
On Friday, MacRumors noted that new orders for Apple's new 27-inch iMac are showing an "available to ship" date of January. That's a change from the estimated three to four weeks originally shown, but with the change of the calendar into December, four weeks would indeed put the lead time into early 2013. Meanwhile, a number of MacRumors forum members have noted that their preorders are now showing "Preparing for Shipment" on Apple.com, with credit cards starting to be charged -- generally a good indication that the product has been handed off to a shipping company and is beginning its journey to your home.
MacPhun has announced that the swanky new 2.1 update to Snapheal we previewed last month is now available from the Mac App Store on Monday. With an entirely new user interface designed from scratch, new erasing algorithms and color processing technology, this inexpensive Mac alternative to the likes of Adobe Photoshop is currently on sale for 50 percent off -- only $9.99! Snapheal 2.1 can now be downloaded from the Mac App Store, and a quick YouTube video shows off everything the updated app can do. A free 15-day trial version of Snapheal 2.1 will soon be available from the company's website as well.
The Loop is reporting that a recently-submitted update to the Mac app Listening To has been rejected by Apple, presumably because the developer attempted to tap into iTunes 11's use of Notification Center. Ironically, the app was initially approved and available in the Mac App Store with this functionality intact, only to have the recent update rejected when no changes to the Notification Center were made. The report notes the previous version continues to be available, so it's unclear if Apple will force the developer to remove the functionality entirely before it can be updated further.
Bloomberg reported Friday that although News Corp will publish its "farewell issue" of The Daily on December 15, the company will actually be folding up on March 5, according to a filing with the New York state labor board. The filing also revealed that 126 employees will be affected by the shutdown, although editor-in-chief Jesse Angelo won't be among them -- he's been shifted into a new position as publisher of the company's New York Post, as announced in tandem with the closure on December 3.

The 27" iMac gets more tempting by the week. Will be a nice purchase in the January Sales window though, and a nice start to 2013.
