Valve announced today that their unique initiative to allow gamers to trade-in their virtual items has officially come out of beta and is launching today.
The new system will allow gamers to trade items and gifted games for other items and games. Only certain games and items are supported at the moment, and only games that have been gifted (and haven't been "opened" yet) can be traded. More and more games will be added over the coming months.
"The addition of Steam Trading is the latest example of how Steam continues to evolve with new features and functions developed based upon feedback," said Jason Holtman, director of business development. "We look forward to seeing how gamers and developers have fun and move this functionality forward."
The system has been in beta for several weeks, and more than 1 million items and games were traded in during that time. The first games to be released with this functionality will be Team Fortress 2, Portal 2 and Spiral Knights.
