Now that an official Google Maps app for iOS has arrived, Apple is likely feeling the pressure to improve its own built-in app even more -- and a new report this week claims they may get some help from Foursquare for doing just that.
MacRumors is reporting that Apple is in "early discussions" with location-based service Foursquare for a data-sharing deal to help improve the company's built-in iOS 6 Maps app.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple senior vice-president Eddy Cue is heading up the negotiations, which appear to be in the early stages.
"Apple Inc. is in early discussions to integrate local data from Foursquare Labs Inc. into its mapping application, according to people familiar with the talks, as the company continues to build an arsenal of local data to try to take on Google Inc.," the report noted late Monday.
Foursquare collects data on local businesses such as restaurants, bars and more, allowing its users to review those businesses for the benefit of other users. The service is similar to Yelp, which is already integrated into Apple's Maps, and the report specifically notes that any Foursquare deal would indeed integrate their data in the same manner.
