iPad users who like their video to be encoded to Xvid rather than Apple's proprietary formats might want to have their happy dance ready, as the impossible has become possible--Apple has approved an App that allows your iPad to rock Xvid movies without conversion!
CineXPlayer is currently available in the App Store at the low, low price of FREE, despite Apple's tendency to frown upon applications that allow for the playback of video files formatted to anything other MPEG-4 or H.264. This is excellent news for those of us with a large collection of Xvid formatted files and no time or paitence to convert them for use on the go.
While the inclusion of the App in the iTunes App Store is great in and of itself, it may well herald even greater things to come. Apple's efforts to control the content that can be consumed using it's products is legendary. Until recently, seeing an application like CineXPlayer being sold through a portal owned by Cupertino would have been unheard of. Perhaps, and this is of course simply speculation, Apple is easing their submission guidelines in order to persuade users away from the need or want to jailbreak their products.
Be warned, however: You'd do well to snag a copy of CineXPlayer while the snagging is still good--as we've seen in recent days, Apple is just as ready to pull applications from their App Store just as quickly as they include them.
