U2 lead singer and frontman Bono sang the praises of Steve Jobs today, in response to a New York Times opinion article that questioned if the former Apple CEO gave enough of his fortune to charity.
From Bono's perspective, Jobs is a very generous giver and supporter of the (Product)RED campaign.
According to Bono, just because Steve Jobs appears hyper-focused on Apple over the years "doesn’t mean that he and his wife, Laurene, have not been thinking about these things." He added, "You don’t have to be a friend of his to know what a private person he is or that he doesn’t do things by halves."
The original article suggested that it was very possible Jobs was an active philanthropist in private, but pointed out that most American billionaires give publicly as a way to inspire others toward charitable giving, and that "those that haven’t have typically come under scrutiny."
Bono, at least, hints that Jobs's donations may be significant, and may occur with or without you reading about them in the daily headlines. He states that when he first approached Jobs about (Product)RED, Steve said, "There is nothing better than the chance to save lives."
