Good news, FaceTime fans on AT&T -- the carrier has caved in just a little bit more, allowing FaceTime over Cellular calls to pretty much every compatible device, assuming you're not still on an unlimited plan.
AT&T Consumer Blog announced Wednesday that the second-place U.S. carrier will now allow FaceTime over Cellular calls at no extra charge for customers using any tiered data plan, assuming you have a compatible device.
The move is a gradual about face from the company's stance when FaceTime over Cellular was introduced back in September and limited only to customers using the carrier's latest Mobile Share data plans.
With this week's change, iPhone 4S customers on tiered plans can now join in the FaceTime over Cellular fun, even if they're not on a Mobile Share plan. The only catch is, those still on a grandfathered unlimited plan continue to be excluded from using the service over 3G/4G.
While iPhone 4S users are no doubt happy, the announcement didn't do much to change the opinion of the Free Press, who continues to believe that AT&T should not be blocking access to FaceTime over Cellular in the first place.
"Until AT&T makes FaceTime available to all of its customers, it is still in violation of the law and the broader principles of Net Neutrality," Free Press Policy Director Matt Wood said in a statement Wednesday. "We remain ready to bring our complaint unless AT&T finishes the job and stops blocking this application altogether."
