Apple and education have always gone hand in hand, so why shouldn't educational customers get a better iMac? Well, now they can -- but they'll have to pay a bit extra for it.
MacRumors is reporting that Apple has quietly introduced an updated version of its low-end iMac intended for educational institutions. The 21.5-inch model is powered by a less-expensive dual-core Intel Core i3 processor with integrated graphics for $200 less than the rest of us would pay for it.
The education-only iMac, which bears the product number ME699LL/A, now sells for $1099, a $100 premium over the previous model Apple introduced more than a year and a half ago. This version includes 4GB RAM and a 500GB hard drive, which is half of what the standard consumer model selling for $1299 offers.
Before you head to the Apple Online Store in search of this deal, be aware that it's only available for purchase from a qualifying educational institution and not individuals using the company's normal educational discount. Educational buyers may also have to wait a little longer, with this iMac showing an estimated shipping time of five to seven days, compared to three to five days for other models available through the Apple Store for Educational Institution.
