President Barack Obama is set to deliver the first State of the Union address of his second term next Tuesday. But if you watch closely, you may see a familiar face in the First Lady's viewing box. Apple CEO Tim Cook was invited to attend the speech by Michelle Obama, and will join another geeky hero in watching our President talk about current affairs.
According to Contra Costa Times, the First Lady asked Cook to sit near her during the State of the Union address. Last year, the widow of Steve Jobs, Laurene Powell Jobs, was afforded the same honor. Mike Krieger, the co-founder of Instagram was also in attendance last year.
But if the CEO of Apple isn't geeky enough for you, Michelle Obama has also invited Bobak Ferdowsi. Name doesn't ring a bell? You may know him as the Mohawk Guy of the Mars Curiosity launch last year. No word yet if he's still rocking the 'hawk for the State of the Union.
Mrs. Obama inviting the CEO of Apple seems, at least on the exterior, to mean something. Maybe it's just a matter of including a tech luminary, or the head of a massive U.S. corporation. But a large portion of the President's speech will likely focus on the issue of American jobs; creating and maintaining them. And one has to wonder if Cook's own change of heart on issues like American manufacturing might play a role in the address.
If you're planning to watch the State of the Union next Tuesday, keep in mind it's streaming to your iPhone via The White House App. The administration has detailed a few new innovations for the speech, including a new system called Citizen Response which allows you to highlight a portion of the address and make comments on the issue.
