How to View AVI Videos on iPhone and iPad

I went on vacation and took a whole bunch of videos with my digital camera. They show up in iPhoto and I can publish them to Facebook and MobileMe, but I can’t get these videos to transfer onto my iPhone or iPad.
Our guess is that your camera’s videos are in AVI format, which isn’t supported by iTunes or the native video player in the iPhone and iPad. If your video is in a supported format (check support.apple.com/specs/#iphone), you can just drag it into iTunes and add it to your devices from there.

We’ve set up HandBrake to convert our AVI movie into an MP4 file that will play perfectly on our iPhone 4.
But if it’s not in that format, you still have options. You could use HandBrake (free, handbrake.fr) to convert the movies to MP4. First right-click the video in iPhoto and choose Show File to reveal it in the Finder. Then open this movie as the Source file in HandBrake and use the presets for your iOS device. When the conversion is done, drop the new MP4 file into iTunes.
Alternatively, you can download an iPhone or iPad app that does play these files, such as CineXPlayer for iPad ($2.99) or the universal GoodPlayer ($2.99), and use that to watch your videos without needing to convert them.
