Imagine, if you will, a scenario where you're a busy sometimes tech journalist who is in his mid-twenties and lives in an urban environment. Despite successfully not burning down his apartment by the year 2013, this would hardly qualify as resounding success in the culinary world. Escoffier Cook's Companion isn't going to teach you how to cook-- but if you've got even a smidgen of experience, it will make cooking that much easier.
Now branding with a name like Escoffier leaves one hoping for a compendium of all you could ever need to make yourself a master chef, but with this app it is not so. Meant as some sort of teaser for other apps the Futura Group has put together, what you'll find here is not recipes, but a litany of tools to make cooking easier. There is a pile of metric to imperial converters, a glossary of cooking terms (complete with hilarious pronunciations), and encyclopedias of both common ingredients and common cooking equipment as well as a cooking timer.
Ultimately, Cook's Companion is not a complete toolbox, but more of a safety net. The information is robust, and the presentation's nice, so it's worth a download.
But enough, the kung fu disciple does not become a master through talk alone, and the wannabe gourmand does not attain the level of mediocre cook through blogging. Let's try a dish from the time-honored tradition of struggling bachelor artists, pasta!
